A/B Walk

Windermere to Ambleside B Walk  : Leader Bev Pritchard

9 Miles 1,360 Ft of Ascent

Today’s walk is a linear walk from Windermere to Ambleside.

We’ll leave the coach near the Railway Station in Windermere and almost immediately start our first ascent, heading up Orrest Head (784 feet and Wainwright outlying fell). Weather permitting our efforts will be rewarded with superb views over Lake Windermere and some far distant hills.

We then make our way down hill towards The Causeway Farm and Near Orrest. When doing the recce for March’s walk this downhill section was still very muddy and quite slippery so I was glad of my walking poles. Fingers crossed the weather will be dry for our visit but there are no guarantees.

Having reached Near Orrest we’ll benefit from country lanes and farm tracks as we head to Dubbs Road. This takes us behind Dubbs Reservoir and then behind Limefitt Holiday Park before we drop down into Troutbeck. If we’ve made good progress then the plan is to have lunch near the church.

Suitably refreshed we then head uphill again, passing the PostOffice Tearoom and on to Robin Lane. The remainder of today’s walk is largely on good quality tracks and takes us through farm yards and over brooks before we reach Skelghyll Wood and Jenkin Crag. The cragg gives us another opportunity for views over the Lake.

Coming out of the wood we start to get our first view of Ambleside and we pass behind Stagshaw Gardens before Hayes Garden Centre appears on our left. We then reach a county road and the outskirts of the town.

Once in Ambleside there are plenty of cafes and pubs and just a few shops to enjoy before making our way to the coach. The coach should be waiting for us in the parking area near the Ambleside Ambulance Station and Resource/Recycling Centre just off Rothay Road and before you get to the turning to Skelwith Bridge.

Today’s B walk is dog friendly with just a few areas of sheep where leads would be required and there are only a couple of stiles to navigate. Have a great day.
